Albany Preschool was started in 1937 as a preschool play center by the
Albany Recreation
Department with funding from the
W.P.A.
(Works Progress Administration).
Originally in Memorial Park, the school moved to a building
on Masonic near Solano in 1937.
In 1942, the W.P.A was forced to withdraw funds because of World War II. At this time, the Albany City Council provided funds to maintain the school and mothers now participated in the school's operation. Participating parents were then trained by adult education programs given at Albany High School. Currently, parents receive participation guidance from the school's A.M. director and teachers.
The City of Albany continues to own the Albany Preschool building and the school remains an integral part of the city. Preference for admission is given to Albany residents, and, along with participation in the Solano Stroll, the school's annual Pancake Breakfast and Spring Fair are events enjoyed by the entire Albany community.
